Imagine the world of the early 1800s.
No motor cars. No electric light. No telephones. No internet. News travelled slowly, journeys took effort, and daily life demanded patience, discipline and resilience.
And yet, in that very different world, men still gathered around the same great principles we value today — faith, honour, loyalty, service and brotherhood.
That is what makes St. Joseph Preceptory No. 9 so special.
With a warrant date of 10th March 1806, St. Joseph Preceptory carries one of the oldest and proudest identities within the Provincial Priory of Lancashire. For more than two centuries, generations of Knights have added their own chapter to its story.
The banner speaks with quiet strength.
The black and white field reminds us of the ancient Templar tradition. The red cross points to faith, courage and sacrifice. The white eight-pointed cross links us to the wider United Orders and the spirit of Malta. At its centre stands St Joseph — a figure of humility, protection, duty and steadfast service.
It is a fitting emblem for a Preceptory built on character.
The world has changed beyond recognition since 1806, but the values remain. Times change. Buildings change. Society changes.
But men of character don’t age.
They stand in every generation — steady, loyal, principled and ready to serve something greater than themselves.
For the members of St. Joseph Preceptory No. 9, there is much to be proud of: a noble name, a remarkable history, a meaningful banner, and a continuing place in the story of Knights Templar Masonry in Lancashire.
